A Clearer Future: Expanding Vision Care for Our Community
Earlier this year, the Order of Malta Clinic of Northern California significantly expanded its ability to provide vision care for uninsured patients thanks to the donation of a fully equipped ophthalmology suite. What was once a limited service is now poised to become a comprehensive eye care program, helping more patients access critical screenings and preventative care.
The new vision suite includes a professional exam chair, slit lamp, tonometer, phoropter, and visual acuity tools—bringing a full suite of medical grade tools and diagnostics into the Clinic setting.
With this new equipment in place, the Clinic can provide more patients with timely access to preventative screenings, diagnostic services, and follow-up care. Specifically, the new vision suite will:
Increase patient screenings by 300%
Expand from basic eye care to comprehensive diagnostic screenings
Reduce wait times from several months to less than 30 days
Addressing the “Silent” Threats to Vision
Many of the most serious eye conditions—like glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy—develop without early symptoms. By the time patients notice changes, vision loss may already be permanent.
This is especially critical for the Clinic’s patient population. Last year, only 24% of diabetic patients received recommended retinopathy screenings, leaving many at risk of preventable vision loss.
With the new program, that’s set to change.
The Clinic expects to:
Increase total screenings from 175 to 600 annually
More than triple diabetic retinopathy screenings
Screen every patient for glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness
Building a Sustainable Eye Care Program
The goal is to establish dedicated “Eye Care Days,” creating a consistent, high benefit service within the Clinic.
The new space is already attracting volunteer ophthalmologists and optometrists, strengthening the Clinic’s ability to deliver specialized care. For patients who need advanced treatment or surgery, partnerships—like the Lions Eye Foundation—ensure continuity of care at no cost.
Vision care is often overlooked, but its impact is far-reaching. Vision loss is closely linked to chronic disease, mental health challenges, and loss of independence.
This program is about more than eyesight. It’s about helping patients stay healthy, work, and navigate daily life with confidence.
By removing barriers to care, the Clinic is ensuring that access to comprehensive vision services does not depend on income or insurance status.
