Each year, World Day of the Sick invites communities around the world to pause, reflect, and stand in solidarity with those who are ill, those who care for them, and all who walk alongside people on their healing journeys.
On Saturday, February 7, 2026, hundreds of community members gathered in Oakland for the 18th annual World Day of the Sick Mass at the Cathedral of Christ the Light. Hosted by the Diocese of Oakland and organized by the Order of Malta, the annual observance is a powerful expression of prayer, compassion, and care for those who are sick and suffering.
A Global Observance with Deep Local Roots
World Day of the Sick was established by Pope John Paul II in 1992 and is observed worldwide near the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. In Oakland, the observance dates back to 2009, when it was first celebrated under the leadership of then-Bishop Allen Vigneron. Over the years, it has grown into a deeply meaningful annual gathering for individuals who are ill, their families, caregivers, healthcare providers, and faith leaders.
This year’s Mass was celebrated by Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, alongside Fr. Erick Villa, Rector, and priests of the Diocese of Oakland. The liturgy featured Messe des Malades by award-winning composer Frank La Rocca, performed by the Cathedral Choir under the direction of Jeffrey Parola. The Mass was also broadcast nationally on EWTN, extending its message of hope and healing far beyond the Cathedral walls.
honoring the sick, caregivers, and healthcare providers
A central part of World Day of the Sick is honoring not only those who are ill, but also the caregivers and healthcare providers who serve them with compassion and dignity every day.
During the Mass, attendees received the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, along with special blessings for caregivers and healthcare providers. Holy water from Lourdes, France, was also be distributed, offering comfort and spiritual support to those in attendance.
Why World Day of the Sick Matters to the Clinic
For the Order of Malta Clinic of Northern California, World Day of the Sick reflects the heart of our mission. Every day, our volunteer providers, medical assistants, and staff serve uninsured adults with respect and high-quality care. This annual observance is a reminder that healthcare is not just about treating illness, but about caring for the whole person, body, mind, and spirit.
As an organization rooted in service, the Clinic is proud to be part of an event that brings together faith, medicine, and community in support of those who need it most.
